The Blue Oval is being tipped to unleash a new V8 powerplant.

Canadian trade union Unifor is heavily involved in Ford engine production at the brand's Windsor engine plant where the famous Windsor V8 is produced. The trade union released a statement - that was later deleted - that another V8 will come out of Windsor.

Reportedly, this V8 will also be brand new, though it's hard to say what it'll power. Much of Ford's V8 lineup is currently powered by the Coyote engine. That's the motor you'll find in some trims of the Mustang and F-150. However, this new V8 could find a home in the 2023 F-350 Super Duty.

As of now, the Windsor plant produces the pushrod 7.3-liter V8 you'll find in the current Super Duty. Since the now-deleted release, Unifor boss man Jerry Dias had said that Ford is preparing for a 6.8-liter V8 that'll power the F-150 and 'Stang. As part of this, the Windsor plant just got a $148 million investment from the Blue Oval.

Given the use of the Coyote V8 in the F-150 and Mustang, we find it odd Ford would consider adding yet another V8 to that lineup at a time when the brand is looking to push further into cleaner powertrain solutions.

Additionally, the more traditional cam-in-block design of this reported motor could be a bit of a step backward. However, the design is an inherently simple and reliable one. That would make it perfect for the Super Duty, as pointed out above. If that's the case this "6.X L" engine as Unifor called it, would replace the current 6.2-liter "Boss" V8. These will surely be some big shoes to fill.

Obviously, the new motor will need to outperform the old one. Numbers sell cars, after all, and "more" is always a safe strategy. The old Boss motor used a cast iron block with aluminum heads and pistons. We imagine the new motor will feature some updates to those materials.

It should also push more power. Currently, the Boss motor makes 385 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque. It's a bit underpowered in its class, with the Ram HD and Silverado HD putting out 410 hp and 429 lb-ft and 401 hp and 464 lb-ft, respectively. It's likely Ford will want to beat those numbers, and it appears Dearborn is going to use displacement to do so.

For now, things are still very much up in the air. The 2023 Super Duty is due this fall, so we'll find out soon enough if this new 6.X L V8 will find a home in the truck. As for the F-150 and Mustang, we'll have to wait a bit longer still.
