New equipment for electric cars and other models to be launched soon.

General Motors plans to spend $51 million to install equipment at its aluminum die-casting foundry in Bedford, Indiana, to manufacture drive unit castings for the upcoming Chevrolet Silverado EV and other current casting applications.

Refurbishment work will begin immediately at the factory. Earlier this year, the 1 million square foot factory began producing electric drive unit castings for 2022 GMC Hummer EV pickups and 2024 SUVs. Production of the truck will begin this month at General Motors' zero plant assembly plants in Detroit and Hamtrak, Michigan.

"Our Bedford facility is one of the world's leading aluminum die casting plants, and this investment is a testament to our confidence in our employees," said Phil Kienle, general manager of North American Manufacturing and Industrial Relations.

"This investment is another example of the company taking our employees into an all-electric future while we strengthen our existing products."

The Bedford factory opened in 1942 and is said to be a leader in aluminum die casting capabilities. The plant's 900 hourly and salaried workers manage the semi-permanent mold and die casting processes that produce cylinder heads, cylinder blocks, gearboxes, structural components, and drive unit housings for Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, and Cadillac vehicles.
