Record-Breaking Datsun 240Z Works Its Magic Over A Quarter-Mile Distance

TThe 1971 classic sports car with 1,900-hp has received some special modifications to help it tear up the track in some very quick times.

The Datsun 240Z is pretty much the genesis of the Datsun/Nissan Fairlady range, and this is all culminating in the new Nissan 400Z coming out a little later in 2022. The original 240Z still retains a place in many people's hearts, though.

Officially Gassed have managed to head to Texas TX2K22, at Houston Raceway, and check out a pretty insane 1,900 hp 240Z that absolutely rocks the 1/4-mile. It belongs to Adam Pettis, and it is one of the most impressive cars on show at TX2K22.

Amazingly, Pettis has had this car since he was 14 years old, and it looked very different when he first got his hands on it. It is a world record holder too, breaking the world record for its particular chassis, anywhere from 1969 to 1978 for an S30 chassis. It broke the record at TX2K in the past, and Pettis is hoping to do that again this year.

This is a 1971 Datsun 240Z to be precise, and right now, it has a 427 ci small-block Ford engine under the hood. Pettis’ dad was a Ford man, and he has stuck with them, and it has a 106 mm Garrett turbo that, all-in, allows the car to produce 1,899 hp.

The car has an automatic transmission to help handle all that power, so the driver can keep his hands on the wheel. There is almost too much power for the car, and Pettis is hoping to bring the times for the car down with the various modifications such as ballast, fine-tuning etc. The hope is to eventually get this car running in the six-second range. This is an ambitious goal, but there is the potential in the 240Z to do that when things are all running as they should be.

The Officially Gassed video on their channel shows Pettis getting in a few passes with this monster of a car. It is so powerful and fast it needs a braking parachute to slow it down. A pass of 7.688 is incredibly impressive. But it gets even better with a world record for the car with a pass time of 7.226 seconds down the 1/4-mile. The car makes it to the final of the Streetcar Class, and Pettis is hoping to take home that overall victory. And he does indeed manage it, to make it a perfect day for the car and ultimately falling only three-tenths shy of a six-second pass time.
