“Quiet quitting” has struck a nerve. It means more time for friends, family and personal pursuits, not to mention a side hustle. But the latest workplace trend has drawbacks.
TikTok and Twitter are awash in explainer videos and endless interpretations. Despite what the name suggests, quiet quitting doesn’t mean turning in a resignation letter. Instead, it’s a stealth retreat from the hustle culture that dominated the pre-pandemic era of giving up everything in pursuit of ambition. Quiet quitting is the newly minted moniker for doing the bare minimum of the job description.

Davis Mills threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to Nico Collins with one second left in the first half, salvaging something good from an up-and-down performance in the Houston Texans’ 24-20 preseason victory over the Los Angeles Rams. Mills is expected to be the rebuilding Texans’ starting quarterback again this season, but Houston’s offense didn’t click much against the Rams’ second- and third-stringers until his final two throws to Phillip Dorsett and Collins netted a combined 50 yards. Roger Carter Jr. scooped and scored for the Rams on a fumbled punt return in the third quarter.
Jason Varitek led Altamonte Springs out of Florida to the 1984 Little League World Series championship game. Varitek, Ed Vosberg and Michael Conforto are the only three players to play in the Little League Baseball World Series, College World Series and Major League Baseball World Series. Now Boston’s game-planning coordinator, the 50-year-old Varitek is headed back to where he burst through on the national scene when the Red Sox play the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday night in the fifth MLB Little League Classic. The game is played at 2,366-seat Historic Bowman Field in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.
Africa’s migratory birds are threatened by changing weather patterns in the center and east of the continent that have depleted natural water systems and caused a devastating drought. Hotter and drier conditions due to climate change make it difficult for traveling species who are losing their water sources and breeding grounds, with many now endangered or forced to alter their migration patterns entirely by settling in cooler northern areas. Roughly 10% of Africa’s more than 2,000 bird species, including dozens of migratory birds, are threatened. The Madagascar fish eagle, the Taita falcon and hooded vultures are among 28 species classified as “critically endangered”.
Victor Robles scored the go-ahead run on Josh Hader’s wild two-base throwing error and rookie Alex Call followed with his first career home run, a two-run shot, as the Washington Nationals stunned the San Diego Padres 6-3. Marco Gonzales allowed two runs over 5 1/3 innings and beat Oakland for the third time this season. Seattle maintained a half-game lead over Toronto for the AL’s top wild card spot. The Mariners are 37-15 over their last 52 games, best in the league over that span. Suarez went deep twice off left-hander Cole Irvin. He has 22 homers this season and 151 since 2018, the most in the majors during that span.
Miles Mikolas threw eight dominant innings, Paul Goldschmidt connected for his 30th homer of the season and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-1. Nolan Arenado had a four-hit night, including three doubles, while veteran catcher Yadier Molina added a season-high three hits and scored a run. Goldschmidt also had three hits. Mikolas gave up just one hit through seven shutout innings before the D-backs scratched across a run in the eighth.
Survivors and faith leaders are demanding Utah change a law that exempts religious leaders from requirements that they report sexual abuse brought to their attention in spiritual confessions. Reform advocates on Friday held a rally in Salt Lake City to share stories of survivors who said their sexual abuse wasn't reported to law enforcement after they alerted local church leaders. The rally follows an Associated Press story about The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and its abuse reporting system. The investigation found the system can be misused by church leaders to divert abuse accusations away from law enforcement and instead to church attorneys who may bury the problem, leaving victims in harm’s way.

The International Monetary Fund is facing pressure to eliminate, or at least, reevaluate how it imposes fees on loans it disperses to needy countries like war-torn Ukraine — which is one of the fund’s biggest borrowers. An amendment to the defense spending bill would suspend IMF surcharges while their effectiveness and burden on indebted countries is studied. That was passed by the U.S. House in July. The Senate is expected to vote on its defense bill in September. Surcharges are added fees on loans imposed on countries that are heavily indebted to the IMF.
Republicans have found success in Democratic strongholds like Maryland and Massachusetts when they have fielded moderate candidates who could appeal to voters in both parties. With Democrats facing headwinds this year, Republicans had hoped that strategy could pay off yet again. But Republican voters this year have nominated loyalists of former President Donald Trump in several Democratic states, including Maryland and Connecticut, making the GOP’s odds of winning those general election races even longer. Massachusetts will face its own test next month as GOP voters decide between a Trump-backed conservative and a more moderate Republican for the party's gubernatorial nominee.

Luis Arraez and Jose Miranda hit back-to-back home runs in the first inning to back Dylan Bundy’s strong start, and the Minnesota Twins beat the Texas Rangers 2-1. Bundy (7-5) gave up a run on just two hits in 5 1/3 innings. Minnesota won its fourth game in a row and kept pace with Cleveland, who leads the Twins by one game in the American League Central. Jorge López finished off his third save with the Twins and 22nd overall. Martín Pérez (9-4) surrendered two runs on five hits and three walks in six innings.
