Carlos Tavares, CEO of automaker Stellattis, said on Wednesday that the four new electric vehicle platforms recently launched by automaker Stellattis are expected to each support the production of 2 million cars per year.

Tavares was appointed as the CEO of Stallantis on January 16, 2021. He promoted the integration of 14 brands of the combined group to achieve the goal of annual synergy of more than 5 billion euros (5.8 billion US dollars) and accelerate The automaker’s transition to electrification.

After the completion of the merger between Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and the French automaker PSA Group, Stellattis was formally established in January and is now the world's fourth largest automaker. Stellantis brands include Fiat, Renault, Jeep, Dodge, Ram, Chrysler, Peugeot, Alfa Romeo and Maserati.

In July, Stellattis announced plans to invest more than 30 billion euros (35.5 billion U.S. dollars) in the electrification of its automotive product line by 2025. These plans include the establishment of four new modular electric vehicle platforms for future models. The company is paying attention to Volkswagen, Audi, Mercedes-Benz, General Motors, Volvo and other global automakers that are investing billions of dollars to develop new electric vehicles.

"These four platforms are designed with a high degree of flexibility and parts sharing to create economies of scale," said Santo Ficili, Stellatis Italy Country Manager. "In this way, each platform will be able to support (produce) up to 2 million units per year."

The four Stellatis EV platforms will support small and medium cars, large SUVs and truck models, such as Dodge Ram pickups. The automaker's goal is for its electric vehicles to have a range of 300-500 miles (500-800 kilometers) and a fast charging capacity of 20 miles (32 kilometers) per minute.

Stellantis announced its four new electric vehicle platforms at the "Electric Vehicle Day 2021" event in July.

Vehicles built on the new platform will be powered by three electric drive module (EDM) families, which combine electric motors, gearboxes and inverters in a single housing. EDM can be configured as front drive, rear drive, all-wheel drive and 4xe ("four times E"). In 2021, the Jeep Wrangler will provide a 4xe hybrid platform.

In order to execute its electrification strategy, Stellattis announced in July that it would invest in software development and make equity investments in joint ventures to provide funding for the future technology development of its vehicles. The joint venture will cover electronic powertrain and electronic transmission development, battery development, as well as digital cockpit and personalized connectivity services.

Stellantis' goal is that by 2030, more than 70% of its sales in Europe will come from low-emission vehicles. The automaker’s goal is to turn 40% of the vehicles in the United States into low-emission vehicles by then, including all-electric and hybrid vehicles.

Stellantis' goal is to make the total cost of owning an electric car equal to the total cost of a gasoline-powered model by 2026.

According to a Reuters report, Ficili said that although the cost of producing electric vehicles is higher than that of traditional internal combustion engine models, there is a more urgent need for better financing options and the construction of more electric vehicle charging infrastructure to allow buyers to obtain electric vehicles.

Last week, Stellattis and battery manufacturer LG Energy Solution signed a memorandum of understanding to establish a joint venture to produce batteries and modules for North America.

The goal of the plant is an initial annual production capacity of 23 GWh, which can be increased to 40 GWh in the future. The plant plans to start producing batteries in 2025. The company's long-term electric vehicle battery procurement strategy is to ensure more than 260 GWh by 2030.

With its four new modular electric vehicle platforms, Stellattis is preparing to better compete with market segment leader Tesla, which has become the world's most valuable automaker, with a market value of more than $1 trillion this week. The company will also compete more with its European rivals Volkswagen and Volvo in the field of electric vehicles, both of which will switch to only producing all-electric vehicles in the next decade.
