Plano, Texas (October 27, 2021)-The new 2022 GR86 has more horsepower and torque, redesigned interior and exterior, and a starting manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) of only 27,700 The US dollar, its pricing is exciting. Arrived at Toyota dealership in December, offering GR86 and GR86 Premium grades. The new generation of Toyota driver cars bring affordable sports car fun, all equipped with a larger 2.4-liter engine, providing nearly 18% horsepower and 11% torque.

The GR86 premium version uses standard 18-inch 10-spoke black aluminum alloy wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport 4® tires and a large duckbill spoiler. Inside, the black and silver six-way adjustable front seats feature two-layer heating and perforated UltraSuede interior with leather side cushions. The black and silver accents continue to the leather steering wheel, gearshift suitcase and handbrake. The new 8-inch touch screen multimedia system with eight speakers brings connectivity and musicality to the driver.

GR86 grade uses 17-inch, 10-spoke machined aluminum alloy wheels wrapped in Michelin Primacy HP® tires. Internal features include six-way adjustable black G embossed fabric, sports fabric side pads with textured vinyl and sports fabric trim on the dashboard, doors and steering wheel. A new 8-inch touch screen multimedia system with six speakers is standard.

You can choose manual or paddle shift automatic transmission. There are seven exterior colors to choose from: Track bRED, Halo White, Steel Silver, Pavement Grey, Raven Black and Neptune or Trueno Blue. The new generation also marks its evolution to the Gazoo Racing lineup, using the new, angular GR86 logo and Toyota's GR badge. The model is expected to arrive at Toyota dealers in December this year.

Next-generation power supply and design

The Gazoo Racing team designed greater horsepower and torque for the new GR86 by using a larger naturally aspirated 2.4-liter horizontally opposed four-cylinder engine. 228 horsepower, higher than 205 horsepower and 184 pound-feet. The torque has been increased from 156 and is now adjusted so that the peak torque reaches the power band much earlier at 3,700 RPM, compared to 6,600 RPM. Due to the larger engine bore, it is now 94 mm. (Previously it was 86 mm.) The displacement is up to 2,387 cc. From 1,998 ml.

Thanks to these changes, the new GR86 provides a responsive and powerful driving experience-especially when exiting corners and straights. The larger engine increases the MT time from 7.0 seconds to 6.1 seconds, and the AT time from 8.0 seconds to 6.6 seconds, an increase of 0 to 60 times. The EPA estimates that fuel economy is 20 City/27 Hwy/22 combined MPG (6 speed M/T) and 21 City/31 Hwy/25 combined MPG (6 speed A/T).

Toyota's D-4S dual-injection technology has also been retuned to provide a more aggressive throttle input. The system combines direct fuel injection and port injection technology. The direct injection system provides a cooling effect in the cylinder, allowing the engine to use a very high 12.5:1 compression ratio to obtain maximum power. Intake port fuel injectors work under light and medium load conditions, helping to maximize combustion efficiency.

The port diameter and length of the intake manifold have been optimized to support linear torque and acceleration, and the intake port has also been redesigned to maximize airflow. The fuel system adopts a new pump design and a wider transfer pipe to provide a stable fuel flow when turning. The cooling system adopts a new high-speed water pump, a five-stage water-cooled oil cooler and a new large-capacity 200W radiator output motor. The larger 5.6-liter center pipe capacity of the exhaust pipe provides a satisfying growl sound, and the active sound control system enhances the engine sound in the cabin.

The GR team also redesigned the chassis and body to supplement the increased power of the GR86. Based on the flexible characteristics of the previous generation 86 chassis, the GR team added a front cross member at the connection between the front suspension and the frame. The hood also adds an internal diagonal frame to ensure stability.

The new full-ring rear frame connects the upper and lower chassis together. The entire frame strategically uses a combination of high-strength steel, hot-stamped steel and aluminum to bring the driver a balance of roll and pitch and maximize control. For additional reinforcement, structural adhesives and high-strength fasteners throughout the bottom form a tight connection frame.

The curb quality of GR86 has also been reduced to achieve maximum controllability. With a weight of only 2,811 pounds on the MT (2,851 pounds on the AT), the GR86 is one of the lightest sports cars on the market. The combination of flexible weight and low center of gravity (COG) comes from a compact four-cylinder engine, a low overhang overall height of 51.6 inches, and a nearly perfect 53 front: 47 rear balance. The result is a pure driver's car.

The GR86's three-spoke steering wheel allows the driver to directly control its flexible maneuverability. It has an overall ratio of 13.5 and only requires 2.5 laps to achieve tight maneuverability. It has a new electronic power steering (EPS) system with a column-mounted integrated motor and control unit to reduce weight and space. GR engineers even changed the steering gearbox mount, using hard rubber bushings and redesigned mounting bolt washers to make it stronger.

The sport-tuned independent MacPherson® front strut has exquisite damping performance and has a new rebound spring to enhance handling characteristics. The double-wishbone multi-link rear suspension uses a Torsen® limited-slip rear differential to increase traction when cornering.

To supplement the increased torque of the GR86, the rear axle provides additional reinforcement, and the pillar stabilizer bar is now directly connected to the subframe for maximum stability. The sports-tuned shock absorber uses harder springs to provide predictable handling for the front-engine and rear-wheel drive coupe. Both grades are equipped with power-assisted 11.6-inch front and 11.4-inch rear ventilated disc brakes.

Manual or automatic-you choose

Sports car purists will love the GR86's six-speed manual transmission. With the push of a button, the MT driver can activate the tracking mode or deactivate the vehicle stability control (VSC). The shape of the gear lever has been optimized, so whether you are shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear, or from 5th to 4th gear, you can achieve a smooth and pleasant shift. In addition, a carbon synchronizer has been added to improve the shift to 4th gear. MT uses new low-viscosity oil and bearings to achieve smooth shifting operation through the higher torque output of the 2.4L horizontally opposed engine.

For automatic transmissions (AT), paddle shifters mounted on the steering wheel provide enthusiasts with a dynamic driving experience. The driver can choose normal, sports, snow or track modes. In sports mode, AT will sense brake and accelerator operations and vehicle behavior to automatically switch to the best gear to provide the driver with the control they want. The extra clutch disc and the new large-capacity torque converter can smoothly transmit the extra power of the engine.

Pure sports car design, track-ready aerodynamics

The first generation 86 was first launched in 2012 and is a tribute to the AE-86 Corolla that was fun to drive in the 1980s. The new GR86 maintains this spirit by focusing on sports design and weight management.

The parabolic transparent lens assembly gives its LED headlights a fearless appearance, which has the same internal L shape as the GR Supra. The G-shaped mesh matrix grille unique to the GR sports car provides air to the air intake, and the functional shape on the front bumper is designed with textured shark skin to reduce drag.

On the side, its front fender and large rocker arm shape form a side door sill spoiler with integrated air outlet, which improves the aerodynamics of the door drop. The air outlet allows the air in the front wheel arch to escape, reducing wheel well turbulence and supporting stability. Along the door, the horizontally aligned low body bottom and the protruding top of the fender combine to show a strong front and rear posture. The black side mirrors increase the contrast and are slightly larger than the previous generation, and the curved shape can maximize airflow.

At the rear, the inverted wheel arches show a broad posture, and the arched fins control the airflow. Aerodynamic fins are added to the lower rear bumper to improve stability. On the Premium level, a large duckbill spoiler sweeps up from the rear deck to increase downforce. The license plate frame is lowered to the rear bumper, simplifying the trunk opening and helping to lower the center of gravity. Three-dimensional rear lights surround the rear deck and blend into decorative shapes along the trunk line to form a wide, connected rear.

GR engineers also used their creativity, seeking to reduce the weight of GR86. In addition to the already aluminum hood, the front fender and roof panel are now made of aluminum. Other ingenious examples of weight reduction include the use of structural adhesives on the underbody, resin fuel doors, new lightweight front seat frames, redesigned EPS, and changes to the driveline and engine block.

GR86 is equipped with Toyota's smart key system, which can operate on the driver's and passenger's doors. After entering the car, the driver will find a horizontally configured instrument panel to get a clear view. One-button start, and the boxer-style GR logo animation will appear on its 7-inch thin-film transistor (TFT) multi-information display. The display content varies depending on whether the driver is in normal, sports, snow or track mode (MT only provides track mode). Sport mode will throw a red ring around the speedometer for a positive look. The track mode is developed based on the driver's input, and the RPM belt, oil and water coolant temperature, and lap timer are prominently displayed in the center.

The HVAC system adds independent left/right temperature adjustment, and the new large LED dial and piano key switch are set on the center console for easy operation. The leather-wrapped steering wheel integrates the audio system, hands-free calling, voice recognition system, display instrumentation and cruise control controls; AT has added an ACC display option button. Premium grade gets aluminum sports pedals and foot pedals. Power windows are equipped with automatic lifting and anti-pinch protection.

The split center console can provide two cup holders or storage space as needed, with an auxiliary audio and two USB connections inside. The AT version also has an open storage area in the center. The door armrest has a long handle for easy access to the indoor storage space.

8-inch touch screen multimedia system with six-speaker sound system, GR86 level; increase to eight-speaker system on Premium. The eight-speaker system now adds a "powerful" mode to the equalizer function to provide acoustics that emphasize bass and treble. For those who want more rumble, a dealer or factory installed 10-inch 200W subwoofer can be used in any class. Either system has Wired Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ compatibility, Bluetooth® for hands-free phone functionality, SiriusXM® 3 month platinum plan trial, and trial access to the available connectivity service suite (additional subscription required).

Riders who want more GR86 can use the new Toyota Gazoo Racing accessories series.

For some extra roar, there is a dual catback GR performance exhaust pipe with stainless steel elbows, black chrome tips and recessed GR logo. There is also a GR performance cold air intake kit with a larger air box and performance air filter. Bolt-on GR support rods and GR performance stabilizer rods are also provided.

MT enthusiasts can use the GR quick shifter kit to fight every second between gears. MT or AT can use GR etched logo shift knob. GR front brake pads are also available. For added style, there are forged 18-inch black or 17-inch bronze aluminum GR wheels.

The bright black, larger GR logo fender vent insert adds a touch of luster. Add a transparent film paint protection kit to the hood, fenders and front bumper or door edge guards that match the paint to prevent clanging. All-weather GR brand floor mats and cargo pallets or carpet GR floor mats help protect the interior. For drivers who wish to make a statement, the side rocker and rear bumper decals have vinyl GR graphics.

Every 2022 GR86 will receive a 1-year membership of the National Motor Sports Association (NASA) for free. GR86 owners will enjoy a series of benefits, including a free high-performance driving event (HPDE) and discounts on tickets for NASA-approved events.
