One way to make the engine work properly and have good durability is to have the right bearing oil clearance. Maintaining an oil cushion between the bearing and the shaft is essential for the normal operation of the bearing and preventing metal-to-metal contact. Generally, as the load distribution increases and the peak load decreases, the smaller the oil gap, the better (see Figure 1). The engine will also run smoother and quieter.
The first question that should be asked is what is the application and what is the quality of the engine components used. The race-quality rigid connecting rod and crankshaft will make the clearance tighter (0.001"-.002") because the deflection will be smaller at high RPM. Tighter gaps require lower viscosity oil so that thin oil can enter the gap space for proper lubrication. Low oil viscosity poses a challenge for bearings, requiring materials that can withstand the load under these conditions. Polymer-coated bearings (King pMaxKote™) are the best solution because the coating acts as a lubricating layer.
On the other hand, inventory components are generally not as precise and rigid as race quality components. The gap needs to be larger (.0025"-.0035") to compensate for deflection and misalignment. Larger gaps will require higher viscosity oil to maintain sufficient film strength. If you’re not sure, it’s better to relax a little rather than tight. Off-road and dirt applications require greater clearance to allow debris to flow through the bearing without causing damage.
The surface finish of the crankshaft also affects the oil clearance, because the surface finish of the journal of> 5 RA requires more space to minimize possible metal-to-metal contact. The proper surface finish of the racing crankshaft should be <5 RA. The consequences of debris in the oil and improper surface finish of the crankshaft can be mitigated by using a soft upper engine bearing with good fit and embedding. King's polymer coating upper layer can absorb debris and crankshaft surface roughness, and allows all parts to continue to work at high RPM.
The current trend is to use low-viscosity oil (0w 10, 5w20) and tight clearance to reduce the resistance to the engine, thereby producing more horsepower and fuel consumption. In either case, whether it is tight or loose, the viscosity of the oil must match the gap in order to maintain a proper oil film during the life of the engine. Without proper oil clearance, the engine will not survive. One way to achieve the required oil clearance is for the installer to choose a manufacturer that can provide consistent wall thickness measurements for engine bearings. King Engine Bearings "Bull's Eye Tolerance" provides this in each group. During King's manufacturing process, the bearing wall thickness is constantly monitored by a computer to ensure that the wall thickness of each bearing meets very strict predetermined tolerance limits (see Figure 2). Finally, all King Performance bearing shells use LVDT technology for automatic wall inspection during the final inspection (see Figure 3). The result is that the size of each set of King Engine bearings is the same.
